Warm Welcome for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned from a week-long visit to the United States where he made at least three public references to the diversity of language in India. Speaking in Chennai, he said Tamil echoes around the United States adding to the reference he made when speaking about the nation’s linguistic diversity during his speeches in the past week. In his first visit to Tamil Nadu since BJP returned to a second term in May, the Prime Minister spoke about the diversity of language with the comments coming after Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remark about Hindi becoming a common language.

“When I was staying in America, I spoke in the Tamil language once and told everyone that this is one of the ancient languages. Even today, the Tamil language echoes in entire America,” PM Modi said while beginning his speech at Chennai Airport with the Tamil greeting “Vanakkam (Hello)” amid loud cheers.  The Prime Minister is in Chennai to attend the convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras).

While addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, PM Modi stressed on the need for a universal brotherhood and went on to quote Kaniyan Pungundranar, a Tamil poet. “We belong to all places and to everyone,” he said. Two days earlier while making a strong pitch for India as a destination for foreign investors at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, the PM reminded those in attendance that the nation was comfortable conducting business in English.

The Prime Minister’s repeated reference to the linguistic diversity of India and his presence in South India today is seen by many as attempts to reduce tensions between South India and the center.  Imposition of non-regional languages has long been a sensitive issue in the South. This comes after a furious reaction to Home Minister Amit Shah’s tweet on September 14.  Days before leaving for the United States, Mr. Shah’s appeal to unify India made on Hindi Diwas with Hindi drew sharp criticism from regional leaders. The leaders saw this as an attempt to impose the language on non-Hindi speaking states.

Tamil Nadu was at the forefront of the charge against Mr. Shah’s appeal with the Leader of opposition and DMK chief MK Stalin stressing, “This is India, not Hindia.” Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan also warned the center not to start a language war that “India or Tamil Nadu doesn’t need or deserve.” The Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, a senior BJP leader was also not left behind as he sounded warning notes.

While India has two official languages at the national level and 22 scheduled languages recognized at the state level, the country does not have any national language. The national language is meant to have a patriotic and nationalistic identity with the official language and scheduled languages designated for the purpose of communication at the official level.  Amit Shah’s tweet on Hindi Diwas hints at having Hindi as a national language.

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison Meets Trump for White House Dinner

United States President Donald Trump welcomed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on a week-long visit to the US, which includes a state dinner at the White House. The two leaders met at the White House where Mr. Morrison was received with a military band and a 19-gun salute. Mr. Morrison is only the second world leader to be given a state dinner by President Trump after France’s Emmanuel Macron.  The pair are close politically and both heralded the decade’s long-relationship between their two countries as the Australian Prime Minister arrived at the White House.

“Australians and Americans understand each other like few other people. We have done what true friends do to stick by each other,” Mr. Morrison said. During the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, the two conservative politicians spent time together as well as earlier that month at the D-Day event in Portsmouth, England. This action led some people to speculate about a budding “bromance.” While at the dinner with Mr. Morrison in Osaka, President Donald Trump praised his counterpart and boasted he had predicted his victory during the elections.

“He didn’t surprise me but he surprised a lot of other people. See, I knew him. So I said he’s going to do very well and he did it,” Mr. Trump told Australian and US officials.  Mr. Trump has constantly praised Mr. Morrison ever since he became Prime Minister in August 2018 and won a shock re-election in May.  On the other hand,Mr. Morrison has praised the United States President as “a strong leader who says what he’s going to do and then goes and does it.” In a recent interview, PM Morrison said he gets on very well with President Trump adding that they have a straight relationship.

The Australian Prime Minister will visit the headquarters of NASA, the US space agency and travel to Chicago to meet tech entrepreneurs during his first visit from 19-27 September. Included in the menu at the state dinner was Jerusalem artichoke ravioli, Dover sole with fennel mousseline and apple tart with calvados ice cream for dessert. The state dinners are rare largely owing to the months of planning that go into them. Actually, they are designed to highlight America’s closest diplomatic relationships with foreign allies.

On Sunday, Mr. Morrison will travel to Wapakoneta, Ohio to tour a “new, Australian owned manufacturing facility” with President Trump, the White House said in a statement. Two days later, he is expected to travel to New York City for the UN General Assembly meetings to deliver an address that will cover the protection of the oceans and preventing terrorist use of the internet, his office said.

The Trump-Morrison discussions are likely to be watched for any mention of Beijing and the US-China Trade war, as well as other security and economic matters. Australia continues to remains economically reliant on China but is openly debating its influence on local society. This is amid concerns about security and freedom of speech.

Venezuela Calls on the United States to Open Diplomatic Ties

On Wednesday (September 18), Venezuela’s socialist government called on the United States to restore diplomatic ties with Caracas. This comes after they opened talks with fringe opposition parties.  Venezuela had initially broke off relations with the United States after Washington had recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim President on January 23.

Speaking to reporters, Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said it made sense for the Unites States “to restore diplomatic contracts and dialogue with the government.” He added that  Washington was only left with “a single path” after their failed efforts to remove Maduro from power, and that was “negotiation and diplomatic communication.”

President Donald Trump’s administration had initially targeted Venezuela’s oil industry and Maduro’s inner circle with a number of economic sanctions. The United States say Maduro is to blame for the economic collapse of Venezuela, from which millions have fled the country due to basic shortages. They also consider President Maduro to be illegitimate after there were widespread reports of irregularities during the last election. Last month, both President Donald Trump and Maduro said talks had been taking place involving senior officials from both parties.

Vice President Rodriguez has welcomed Monday’s agreement involving the government and minority opposition parties that are outside of Guaido’s coalition. This action was aimed at opening negotiations on political changes in order to resolve Venezuela’s crisis. Former presidential candidate Javier Bertucci also joined in the pact on Wednesday. Edgar Zambrano, Guaido’s deputy as National Assembly leader, was the first person to be released late Tuesday. He also said 58 other opposition figures were set to be released as from Wednesday.  The agreement mainly involves the return of socialist lawmakers to the opposition.

Speaking to reporters, the Assembly’s deputy Vice-presidentStalin Gonzalez said the agreement would allow Maduro “to cling to power.” The latest deal by Venezuela’s government is aimed at sidelining Guaido by flooding his power base with pro-Maduro members. The National Assembly is the only one of Venezuela’s governing institutions that is not under Maduro’s control.  However, the National Assembly, in a defiant move confirmed Guaido as its leader.

Closed diplomatic ties between Venezuela and the United States came after President’s Donald Trump regime failed to recognize Maduro as the leader of Venezuela. Guaido, along with the Trump administration and other international observers argued that Maduro was not the rightful President of the South American nation. They also claimed the election was rigged so that the dictator could win a second six year term.

It is unclear about the next step of action to be taken by the United States since they are yet to issue a response. For now, we only have to wait and see how things are going to unravel between the two nations as time goes by. It is then that the fate of diplomatic relations between Washington and Venezuela could be determined.

U.S President Donald Trump and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Address 50,000 Indian Americans in Houston

For the first time in recent history, two leaders of the largest democracies in the world would be addressing a joint rally. This is after U.S President Donald Trump ended speculation around whether he would make a joint appearance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the September 22 “Howdy, Modi!” diaspora event in Houston. The U.S President is also going to address the rally that is expected to be in the “tens of thousands” as per reports from the White House Press Secretary.

In a statement, the White House Press Secretary said, “It will be a great opportunity to emphasize the strong ties between the people of the United States and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the world oldest and largest democracies, and to discuss ways to deepen their energy and trade relationship. A statement from Sunday’s event organizers, Texas India Forum, said the event was going to bring together the President of the world’s most influential democracy, the Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy, and a bipartisan delegation of governors, Members of Congress, Mayors and other public officials.

This joint appearance comes at a very crucial time for US-India ties. Just recently, a number of U.S lawmakers, nearly all Democrats, raised concerns around India’s obligation of Article 370- special status for Kashmir. Furthermore, the two countries are also facingissues in their trading relationship. With the U.S elections just around the corner in 2020, Mr. Modi’s presence would also go a long way in helping Mr. Trump with the Indian-American vote.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India’s Ambassador to the U.S said Mr. Trump’s participation in the event is a true reflection of both the strength of ties between the two countries together with the personal chemistry between the Prime Minister and the President. “The two leaders addressing the ‘Howdy Modi’ event is historic and unprecedented. It reflects not only the closeness and comfort levels in the relationship but also the personal chemistry and friendship between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump.” Mr. Shringla said. Steny Hoyer, House Majority Leader, the second ranking member of the Democratic leadership in the House will also address the gathering.

Protests Planned

As per reports from the Houston Chronicles, some Sikhs and Kashmiri Muslims had planned a “dress rehearsal” protest in Houston on Saturday. Apparently, The Indian America Muslim Council, an advocacy for Indian Muslims in the United States, had sent out an electronic notice and poster, asking people to join the Houston protests against the government’s Article 370 action and subsequent restrictions in Kashmir, the NRC issues in Assam. The planned Houston protest is also against the treatment of minorities in India.

Over 50,000 people have already registered for the event, which will be held at the Houston’s NRG stadium. The wire first reported Mr. Trump’s possible attendance on Saturday. They also said an announcement on the India-US trade package might be made during the Houston event.

PM Narendra Modi may visit to America in September

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit America for the Climate Action Summit organized by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in September, and during this time he can take part in a huge rally of Indian expatriates in Houston. This information has been given by a source familiar with the initial planning of this event.

Immediately after returning to power, PM Modi had listed the stake in the Summit and the General Assembly’s High Debate in the plans of his foreign visits shortly after coming to power, but the official announcement about the Houston meeting is yet to be announced. A source close to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that the plan for the Houston Rally is in the initial phase, whose date is yet to be determined.

The source said that this is not going to be organized any party and it will be organized by groups representing different classes of migrants in Texas.

According to the 2010 census, Texas was the fourth most populous state of the people of Indian origin. According to The Pew Research Center estimates, there were 1,25,000 American citizens in Houston in 2015, where the Indian Consulate also is located. Apart from this, there were 1,45,000 people of Indian origin in Dallas-Fort Worth.

During his foreign visits PM Modi always seeks opportunities to join the Diaspora. During his last visits, he participated in three major community meetings in New York, San Jose and Washington.

The summit convened by Guterres will be held on September 23 and there will be a high level meeting of the assembly next day. In this way, Modi’s visit to Houston will be either before the United Nations in New York or after speaking about him in a common debate.

Modi’s role in the summit on the issue of climate can be as a star. Because Gitterres has been praised repeatedly for Modi’s work on climate change and future plans. Last year, Guterres also honored him with the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award.

During the UN meetings, Modi will have an opportunity to meet many leaders. During this time, there may be other meetings between the US President Donald Trump and Modi meeting, because it is not certain whether the Trump will participate in the Summit or not.

This will be Modi’s sixth visit to America being the Prime Minister in a year.

India vs New Zealand match update ICC World Cup-2019

The first semi-final match of the ICC World Cup-2019 between New Zealand and India on Tuesday, which was played on Manchester’s Old Trafford ground, was not completed due to rain. Now this match will be completed on the Reserve Day (that is, Wednesday) and will start from there where it stopped on Tuesday. But still the worry of rain completely is not over.

According to weather reports, there will be cloudbursts from 5 o’clock in the morning of Manchester. However, the clouds will remain cloudy from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the same time, there is a possibility of light rain at 8:00 PM. Now it will depend on Manchester season whether this match will also be completed on Wednesday.

When rain came in the match on Tuesday, New Zealand’s score was 211 at 46.1 overs for five wickets. The rain continues for a long time. It stopped in the middle but then started again. The umpires decided that there are no conditions that the match will be played today (Tuesday) so that the remaining match will be played on Wednesday.

The estimates released by the Meteorological Department for Tuesday were almost right. If it rains on Wednesday also, then India and New Zealand can end the match without any results. There is a reserve day in the knockout round of the ICC World Cup. According to this rule, if match is not completed on match date, then the match will be started from the very next day where the first day was over. This happened in the match between India and England in the World Cup played in England in 1999.

To complete the match, it is necessary to bat India by 20 overs on reserve day. If the match is not completed in the day of reserve day then India will go into the final because they were ahead of New Zealand in the points table. India finished the league phase with the first position while New Zealand was in fourth place. The Indian team was on top of the points table with 15 points. New Zealand was at number four with 11 points.

What has happened so far-

On Tuesday, when the match started, the clouds were clouded and New Zealand captain Ken Williamson decided to bat after winning the toss. The Indian bowlers took advantage of the favorable conditions for themselves and troubled Kiwi batsmen. First two overs Jaspreet Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar removed Maiden On the fifth ball of the third over, the Kiwi team’s account opened in some way, but Bumrah hit the first ball of the next over to give India the first breakthrough by catching Martin Guptill on Virat Kohli. Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar took good advantage of getting wickets, and Kiwi did not allow the batsmen to score runs. New Zealand were able to score 27 runs in 10 overs, which is the lowest score in this World Cup in the first Power Play.

Henry Nicholas (28) and Williamson were batting comfortably. In the next 10 overs, there was not much speed in the rung. The Kiwi team added just 46 runs in 11-20 overs. During this time, Ravindra Jadeja gave Nicholas another success. After this Williamson and Taylor pushed the innings and shared 65 runs for the third wicket. The Indian bowlers also troubled both of them, but Williamson was making his class and Taylor in some way with his experience. Meanwhile, Williamson completed his half-century.

Set up Williamson wanted to target spinners. He also found some gaping shots but in an effort to play an inside out shot, he gave catch to Jadeja on Chahal’s bowl. Kiwi captain faced 95 balls in his innings and hit six fours. On the last ball of the 41st over, Hardik Pandya hit Jimmy Neesham at the hands of Dinesh Karthik, leaving Kiwi’s fourth wicket of the team. Neesham scored 12 runs off 18 balls.

On the fourth ball of 45th over, Bhuvneshwar bowled Colin de Grandhom (16) to a New Zealand score of 200 runs at the loss of five wickets. Taylor and Latham had the responsibility of bringing the team to good scores but the rain did not allow it to happen. In the match played for India, Jaspreet, Bhubaneswar, Pandya, Jadeja and Chahal have taken one wicket each. Pandya, Jadeja and Chahal have taken 10 out of their quota while two each of Bumrah and Bhubaneswar are left.

First Test of BE-7 Lunar Lander Engine Performed By Blue Origin

Blue origin has performed their first ever hotfire test of the engine that they are planning to use on their Blue Moon lunar lander. This first test took place on June 18 at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. On June 19, the founder of Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos, tweeted about the test having taken place the previous day. In his tweet, Jeff Bezos said the 35-second test went ahead as expected. “Data looks great and hardware is in perfect condition” he wrote in his posts. The tweet included a video of how the test took place.

Blue Moon Lander Capacity

On May 9, the company had announced the BE-7 engine in an event where they also unveiled their updated design of the Blue Moon lander. The lander will be able tocarry 3.6 metric tons of cargo to the lunar surface. To make it even better, it contains a “stretch tank” version that increases the total capacity to 6.5 metric tons. This larger version of the Blue Moon Lander will have the capabilities to carry an ascent stage to enable crewed mission to the lunar surface.

Single BE-7 Engine

The Blue Moon lander will be powered by a single BE-7 engine. This engine is capable of producing 10,000 pounds force of thrust. To work effectively, the BE-7 engine uses liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellants. This action has leveraged the company’s experience on their larger BE-3 engine that is currently being used on their New Shepard suborbital vehicle. The BE-3 engine is also used in their New Glenn orbital rocket.

Why Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen

During their event in May, Bezossaid the company opted to go with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen for the BE-7 engine due to the fact that they have a high performance. Furthermore, the two liquid gases allows the Blue Moon Lander to make full use of the situ resources that are present on the moon in form of water ice that could be easily converted into hydrogen and oxygen. When launching the engine in May, Bezos said, they were going to be able to get hydrogen from that water in the moon and refuel their vehicles on the surface of the moon. Apparently, the company has been working on this project for so many years.

Blue Origin and NASA

Blue Moon are already working closely with NASA on the agency’s plan aimed at returning humans to the surface of the moon. This company is among the 11 that received contracts from NASA on May 16 in order to perform studies and the initial development of the lunar lander descent stages and transfer prototype vehicles. Blue Moon Company is expected to partake in a separate call aimed at proposals later this year for work on integrated lunar lander systems. The successful test by Blue Moon is a step in the right direction when it comes to making space exploration better.

Iran-US Tensions: All You Need to Know

Fears of a war between Iran and the United States continue to intensify after Iranian forces shot down a US drone. On Thursday, Iran said they had successfully downed an unmanned aircraft in Iranian airspace. However, the US said their drone was in international territory before it was finally hit by a surface-to-air-missile. The quick developing events have activated international alarm and impelled concern the standoff is eventually going to escalate into a major open confrontation between the two nations.

Latest Happenings

On Monday 24th, the Iranian government said they will not be shaken by the new US sanctions as it will have “no impact”. “We really do not know what the new sanctions are and what they want to target anymore, and also do not consider them to have any impact,” said Abbas Mousavi at a press conference in Tehran.

Since the escalation of these tensions, the US has already imposed a robust slate of punitive sanctions on Tehran. These sanctions were aimed at choking off Iranian oil sales while at the same time crippling its economy. On Monday, Hesamodin Ashna, the advisor to President Hassan Rouhani twitted “America’s claim of readiness for unconditional negotiation is not acceptable with the continuation of threats and sanctions. We consider war and sanctions to be two sides of the same coin.

US Secretary of State Meeting withSaudi Arabia’s King

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo twitted that he had discussed the heightened tensions in the region with Salman, Saudi Arabia’s King during a meeting in Jeddah. He also said that they talked about the need to promote maritime security in the region following attacks on oil tankers in Gulf Waters which Riyadh and Washington are blaming Iran. However, Tehran has completely denied these charges.

President Trump Willing to Talk to Iran

A senior US official said President Donald Trump is ready and willing to talk to Iran concerning a deal that would lift American sanctions but Tehran would have to close its nuclear and missile programmed as well as its support for proxies. On the other hand, US Special Representative on Iran Brian Hook told reporters that Iran could ‘come to the table or watch its economy crumble”. He however, refused to give more details about the new US sanctions that are expected later on Monday. Hook was speaking by telephone from Oman where he is currently touring Gulf countries before heading to Paris.

Iran-US tensions are set to escalate even further as more sanctions continue to be imposed by the US government on Iran.  Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has warned Iran about more sanctions if it continued its “aggressive policies” but said Riyadh had no intension of going into war. For now we only have to wait and see what new sanctions the US is going to impose and how Iran is going to respond to these sanctions. It is only then that we can know how this tension will fair on.

NASA’S New Atomic Clock: An Innovation That is set to Make Deep Space Travel Safer

NASA is set to begin the testing of their new one-way navigation system by making use of a small atomic clock.  With thisnew NASA’s Deep Atomic Clock, a spacecraft can safely fly themselves to far off destinations such as Mars and the Moon. Before the introduction of this one of a kind invention, a spacecraft could go by calculating its current location in relation to the Earth.

Now that we have the Deep Atomic Clock, data can be sentvia a relay system that has the ability to take almost everything from minutes to hours passed along. Even though this system is currently working quite well with close-to-earth missions, we will still need a new invention in order to navigate the deep-space projects.

Launch Date

NASA is expected to start testing the Deep Atomic Clock in June once it has already been launched on the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket into the orbit of Earth for one year.  The Atomic Clock will be tested rigorously to check whether it will be able to give a helping hand to spacecraft whenever they want to locate themselves.

If the test goes as planned, it could prove beneficial to space exploration since the doors to a one way navigation will be opened. This action is then set to allow both crewed and autonomous spacecraft to fly into deep space without encountering any problems on the way. At the moment, spacecraft that explore deep space are controlled on Earth by navigators. With the Deep Space Atomic Clock, this will be a thing of the past as it enables onboard autonomous navigation according to Jill Seubert, the deputy principal investigator.

GPS and Smartphones are Inaccurate for Deep Space

GPS and Smartphones have proved inaccurate for deep space exploration. This is because they tend to determine their location by sending data to atomic clocks on satellites that are currently orbiting the Earth. In order to determine the position of the device, we would then have to triangulate its position in relation to the atomic clock.

Spacecraft can no longer make use of GPS since any small inaccuracy will mean vast distances. Therefore, a spacecraft is forced to use giant satellites to send signals which then bounce back to Earth. With accurate clocks on the ground, they are able to measure the duration that the message takes, to send and receive. It is then that navigators can tell how far away the spacecraft is. Furthermore, they can also detect how fast it is travelling. However, despite the system being sound, it may take a long time for the messages to be sent and received. Fortunately NASA is already working on this.

NASA’s new Deep Space Atomic Clock is set to change space exploration completely once it has been fully tested. As more tests continue to be done, we will wait and see how the Deep Space Atomic Clock is going to change space exploration.
