Rollable Display Smartphones to Debut in 2024, Courtesy of Vivo and Transsion

Vivo entered the foldable smartphone segment in April last year with the launch of the Vivo X Fold. The flagship smartphone was able to deliver on its promise of being a premium experience through outstanding display, chipset, and battery performance, as well as an imaging system co-engineered with ZEISS. It also managed to reduce the screen crease and improve hinge durability.

Having already made a dent in the segment with its X Fold, Vivo is set to introduce its successor this month. The upcoming vivo X Fold 2 features a larger inner display, better cameras, and improved internals.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the vivo X Fold 2 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. This octa-core chipset is built on a 4nm process and clocks in at 3GHz. It is paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The vivo X Fold 2 will also support 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging.

The rumored vivo X Fold 2 is said to be the first folding smartphone with dual-pixel autofocus sensors on both the outer and inner displays. This allows for a more stable and accurate autofocus. This is a welcome change from the current generation of smartphones, which only have one autofocus sensor on the rear.

Another notable addition to the vivo X Fold 2 is its quad-rear camera setup. The device is claimed to have a 50MP primary shooter, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5x periscope lens. The vivo X Fold 2 is also expected to have a 16MP punch-hole selfie camera on the outer and inner displays.

While the Vivo X Fold 2 is yet to be officially announced, the company has teased it with images and videos. The images and videos show the upcoming smartphone in its folded and unfolded positions. The device is also alleged to have a new hinge design that will allow it to be used in both portrait and landscape modes.

Not to be left behind, Transsion Holdings, the parent company of brands such as Tecno, Infinix, and Itel, showcased a prototype of its Phantom Ultimate smartphone with a rollable display in September last year. Like the Vivo X Fold, it is supposed to be able to rotate between 60 degrees and 120 degrees. This is useful for using the phone as a tablet or viewing movies without having to prop it against something. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate is also expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset paired with up to 6GB of RAM and up to 256GB worth of storage.
