The World Could be at Risk of Widespread Famines-UN

The United Nations has warned the world could be facing the risk of widespread famines “of biblical proportions” due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. A recently released report says the number of people suffering from hunger could go from 135 million to more than 250 million. Head of the World Food Programme (WFP), David Beasley, said urgent action was needed in order to avoid the catastrophe.

People who are more likely to suffer from hunger are those in countries affected by climate change, economic crisis and conflict, the WFP says. The fourth annual Global Report on Food Crises highlights 10 countries including Nigeria, Haiti, Yemen, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan and Syria. Even before the Coronavirus hit, parts of South Asia and East Africa were already experiencing food shortages caused by drought and locust infestations.

While addressing the UN Security Council during a video conference, Mr. Beasley said it is high time for the world to “act wisely and act fast.” The head of WFP- who recently recovered from Covid-19– added: “we could be facing multiple famines of biblical proportions within a short few months.”  Earlier this month, the WFP said it was set to halve aids to parts of war-torn Yemen that is controlled by Houthi rebels due to the ongoing funding crisis.  Some donors had actually stopped their aid amid concerns the Houthi forces obstructed deliveries.

Arif Husain, the WFP’s senior economist, said the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic was potentially catastrophic for millions are the world “who are already hanging by a thread.”

“It is a hammer blow for millions more who can only eat if they earn a wage,” he said in a statement.  The WFP feeds more than 12 million people in Yemen every month, 80% of whom reside in areas controlled by Houthi forces.

China to End Travel Curbs At The Epicentre of The Coronavirus Pandemic

In an announcement made on Tuesday, the epicenter of Coronavirus in China is set to open up as governments around the world tighten lockdowns. Hubei, where the novel coronavirus surfaced late last year, will permit healthy residents to leave the province as from midnight. This comes two months after they were instructed to stay indoors in order to curb the rising cases of infections.  However, the rules will not be applicable to the hardest-hit city of Wuhan until April 8.

This comes at a time when countries such as New Zealand and Britain joined other nations in North America, Europe, Asia and Middle East in declaring countrywide shutdowns in a bid to contain the growing number of infections. The International Olympic Committee has already postponed the Tokyo Games by one-year due to the threat posed by coronavirus.  Across the globe, the grim toll continues to mount with almost 390,000 declared infections and close to 17,000 fatalities.

Europe alone has more than 200, 000 declared infections making it the new epicentre of the coronavirus. Italy is the most affected country in Europe followed by Spain though officials saying the lockdown may be bearing fruit. Extraordinary measures imposed in different parts of the world have greatly altered the daily life of more than 1.7 billion people.  In Spain, soldiers who are tasked with the main responsibility of curbing the outbreak reported finding abandoned elderly people-some dead.

The financial impact of economies coming to a halt continues to unnerve policymakers with some flooding the market with yet more cash in an attempt to keep the wheels turning. In the United States, the Federal Reserve unveiled an unprecedented bond-buying programme in a move that was yet to be witnessed for more than a decade. In Britain, the government ordered  a three-week shutdown of ‘non-essential’ shops and services while also banning gatherings of more than two people. Many countries around the world are struggling to put in place more aggressive measures to curb coronavirus as they lack enough resources.

Japan’s Super Nintendo World Theme to Feature Smart Mario-themed Wristbands

The Mario-themed expansion to Universal Studios is turning out to be one of the most fascinating and tech-infused theme park attractions to date. Launching ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the park will feature wearable wrist bands called “Power Up Bands” that sync with a smartphone app and track digital activities whenever you walk around. As per the latest reports, this band will allow guests the chance of collecting digital coins and competing against other attendees of the park.

Thierry Coup, the Chief creative officer of Universal Creative (the theme park design and R&D division of Universal Parks 7 Resorts), made the announcements at the park’s global kickoff celebration. He actually called Super Nintendo World “a life-size living video game.

Its mobile app will feature a game-style overhead map for locating attractions. You can also create a profile and unlock achievements. It is however unclear why you need to collect these digital coins beyond rights. However, you can still envision some form of prizes to win like Mario memorabilia.

According to Coup, Osaka is going to get the first Super Nintendo Land, which will then be followed by the Companion Universal Park Sites in the US (precisely in California, Orlando, Florida and Hollywood). Despite this, there is no specific timetable for when the park will come stateside quite yet. In fact, not much is known regarding the expansion, besides confirmation that there is going to be a real-world Mario Kart Ride.

This is because it is impossible for users to open a Super Nintendo world without one of those. For now, we only have to wait for more information in order to know the benefits that Japan’s Super Nintendo World Theme will bring. It is then that you can determine whether it is worth opting for or not.

Aurel Jashari, survivor of the Albanian earthquake, meets his hero Cristiano Ronaldo

Aurel Jashari, 7, jumped from the balcony of his apartment to escape the collapsing building in Thumane, one of the hardest hit towns in the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that killed 51 people and injured more than 3,000. Aurel lost his sister and grandmother, while Alesio lost his father and sister.

The boy was taken to the hospital and then visited by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who learned of their dream.

Rama on Friday took them to Rome to meet Juventus players Cristiano Ronaldo and Gianluigi Buffon. Both boys received a signed jersey and took a photo with the players. They hugged and exchanged high-fives with the players.

“It is not only for them. It is for all the suffering people in the country,” said Rama.

At a dinner afterward together with the kids’ parents, Rama also gave to Cakoni a jersey signed by Milan’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Nov. 26 earthquake damaged more than 11,000 buildings and left an estimated 12,000 people homeless. Many have found shelter in hotels, public buildings, tents, with relatives or in neighboring Kosovo.

U.S Forces to Withdraw From Northern Syria before Turkey Operation

The United States military are planning to move their forces from the Turkish border with Northern Syria. This comes after the White House said Turkey would soon begin an operation in a part of Northern Syria where it plans to settle Syrian refugees. As per reports from a U.S official who has direct knowledge to the situation, The U.S has not received any orders to commence a large scale withdrawal from the region, remaining in a “wait and see” position.

In a statement that was released Sunday night, the White House said Turkey would “soon be moving forward with its long planned operation” in Northern Syria. This came after United States President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip. However, President Trump remained defiant on the issue tweeting on Monday, “The Kurds fought with us, but we paid massive amounts of money and equipment to do so. They have been fighting Turkey for decades. I held off this fight for almost three years, but it is time to get out of these ridiculous endless wars, many of them tribal, and bring our soldiers home.”

According to a U.S official, the U.S military said this Turkish operation could be launched “at any time.” However, the American forces have at the moment cut all ties and coordination with the Turkish military, and therefore, they do not expect any advanced warning from Turkey as to when or how the operation is going to commence.  This is a major blow to the Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)relied upon by the United States as the most effective fighting force against ISIS.

On Monday, the official spokesperson of the SDF, Mustafa Bali said the U.S decision to stand aside as Turkey moves into Syria was “shocking and unexpected.” Bali termed the decision ‘a huge mistake’ that will allow ISIS to “reunite itself and appear again stronger than before.”

“We at the SDF believe that everything we achieved in the last five years, and all the sacrifices we made to defeat ISIS will all be destroyed with the latest American decision,” Bali said. “It seems that the policy of the United States is to betray their friends and allies,” he added.  In a tweet, Erdogan’s spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin said Turkey will continue to fight against ISIS and will not allow it to return “in any shape and form.”

The 12-member Syria Study Group has warned in their latest report that the war in Syria is far from over and ISIS is still a threat.  This contradicts the White House’s claim that ISIS had been defeated.  Panos Moumtzis, regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis with the United Nations said the U.N had drawn up contingency plans to reach people who might flee south with food and medical aid. “We are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst,” he said while addressing reporters in Geneva.

Warm Welcome for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned from a week-long visit to the United States where he made at least three public references to the diversity of language in India. Speaking in Chennai, he said Tamil echoes around the United States adding to the reference he made when speaking about the nation’s linguistic diversity during his speeches in the past week. In his first visit to Tamil Nadu since BJP returned to a second term in May, the Prime Minister spoke about the diversity of language with the comments coming after Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remark about Hindi becoming a common language.

“When I was staying in America, I spoke in the Tamil language once and told everyone that this is one of the ancient languages. Even today, the Tamil language echoes in entire America,” PM Modi said while beginning his speech at Chennai Airport with the Tamil greeting “Vanakkam (Hello)” amid loud cheers.  The Prime Minister is in Chennai to attend the convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras).

While addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, PM Modi stressed on the need for a universal brotherhood and went on to quote Kaniyan Pungundranar, a Tamil poet. “We belong to all places and to everyone,” he said. Two days earlier while making a strong pitch for India as a destination for foreign investors at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, the PM reminded those in attendance that the nation was comfortable conducting business in English.

The Prime Minister’s repeated reference to the linguistic diversity of India and his presence in South India today is seen by many as attempts to reduce tensions between South India and the center.  Imposition of non-regional languages has long been a sensitive issue in the South. This comes after a furious reaction to Home Minister Amit Shah’s tweet on September 14.  Days before leaving for the United States, Mr. Shah’s appeal to unify India made on Hindi Diwas with Hindi drew sharp criticism from regional leaders. The leaders saw this as an attempt to impose the language on non-Hindi speaking states.

Tamil Nadu was at the forefront of the charge against Mr. Shah’s appeal with the Leader of opposition and DMK chief MK Stalin stressing, “This is India, not Hindia.” Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan also warned the center not to start a language war that “India or Tamil Nadu doesn’t need or deserve.” The Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, a senior BJP leader was also not left behind as he sounded warning notes.

While India has two official languages at the national level and 22 scheduled languages recognized at the state level, the country does not have any national language. The national language is meant to have a patriotic and nationalistic identity with the official language and scheduled languages designated for the purpose of communication at the official level.  Amit Shah’s tweet on Hindi Diwas hints at having Hindi as a national language.

Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison Meets Trump for White House Dinner

United States President Donald Trump welcomed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on a week-long visit to the US, which includes a state dinner at the White House. The two leaders met at the White House where Mr. Morrison was received with a military band and a 19-gun salute. Mr. Morrison is only the second world leader to be given a state dinner by President Trump after France’s Emmanuel Macron.  The pair are close politically and both heralded the decade’s long-relationship between their two countries as the Australian Prime Minister arrived at the White House.

“Australians and Americans understand each other like few other people. We have done what true friends do to stick by each other,” Mr. Morrison said. During the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, the two conservative politicians spent time together as well as earlier that month at the D-Day event in Portsmouth, England. This action led some people to speculate about a budding “bromance.” While at the dinner with Mr. Morrison in Osaka, President Donald Trump praised his counterpart and boasted he had predicted his victory during the elections.

“He didn’t surprise me but he surprised a lot of other people. See, I knew him. So I said he’s going to do very well and he did it,” Mr. Trump told Australian and US officials.  Mr. Trump has constantly praised Mr. Morrison ever since he became Prime Minister in August 2018 and won a shock re-election in May.  On the other hand,Mr. Morrison has praised the United States President as “a strong leader who says what he’s going to do and then goes and does it.” In a recent interview, PM Morrison said he gets on very well with President Trump adding that they have a straight relationship.

The Australian Prime Minister will visit the headquarters of NASA, the US space agency and travel to Chicago to meet tech entrepreneurs during his first visit from 19-27 September. Included in the menu at the state dinner was Jerusalem artichoke ravioli, Dover sole with fennel mousseline and apple tart with calvados ice cream for dessert. The state dinners are rare largely owing to the months of planning that go into them. Actually, they are designed to highlight America’s closest diplomatic relationships with foreign allies.

On Sunday, Mr. Morrison will travel to Wapakoneta, Ohio to tour a “new, Australian owned manufacturing facility” with President Trump, the White House said in a statement. Two days later, he is expected to travel to New York City for the UN General Assembly meetings to deliver an address that will cover the protection of the oceans and preventing terrorist use of the internet, his office said.

The Trump-Morrison discussions are likely to be watched for any mention of Beijing and the US-China Trade war, as well as other security and economic matters. Australia continues to remains economically reliant on China but is openly debating its influence on local society. This is amid concerns about security and freedom of speech.

Venezuela Calls on the United States to Open Diplomatic Ties

On Wednesday (September 18), Venezuela’s socialist government called on the United States to restore diplomatic ties with Caracas. This comes after they opened talks with fringe opposition parties.  Venezuela had initially broke off relations with the United States after Washington had recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim President on January 23.

Speaking to reporters, Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said it made sense for the Unites States “to restore diplomatic contracts and dialogue with the government.” He added that  Washington was only left with “a single path” after their failed efforts to remove Maduro from power, and that was “negotiation and diplomatic communication.”

President Donald Trump’s administration had initially targeted Venezuela’s oil industry and Maduro’s inner circle with a number of economic sanctions. The United States say Maduro is to blame for the economic collapse of Venezuela, from which millions have fled the country due to basic shortages. They also consider President Maduro to be illegitimate after there were widespread reports of irregularities during the last election. Last month, both President Donald Trump and Maduro said talks had been taking place involving senior officials from both parties.

Vice President Rodriguez has welcomed Monday’s agreement involving the government and minority opposition parties that are outside of Guaido’s coalition. This action was aimed at opening negotiations on political changes in order to resolve Venezuela’s crisis. Former presidential candidate Javier Bertucci also joined in the pact on Wednesday. Edgar Zambrano, Guaido’s deputy as National Assembly leader, was the first person to be released late Tuesday. He also said 58 other opposition figures were set to be released as from Wednesday.  The agreement mainly involves the return of socialist lawmakers to the opposition.

Speaking to reporters, the Assembly’s deputy Vice-presidentStalin Gonzalez said the agreement would allow Maduro “to cling to power.” The latest deal by Venezuela’s government is aimed at sidelining Guaido by flooding his power base with pro-Maduro members. The National Assembly is the only one of Venezuela’s governing institutions that is not under Maduro’s control.  However, the National Assembly, in a defiant move confirmed Guaido as its leader.

Closed diplomatic ties between Venezuela and the United States came after President’s Donald Trump regime failed to recognize Maduro as the leader of Venezuela. Guaido, along with the Trump administration and other international observers argued that Maduro was not the rightful President of the South American nation. They also claimed the election was rigged so that the dictator could win a second six year term.

It is unclear about the next step of action to be taken by the United States since they are yet to issue a response. For now, we only have to wait and see how things are going to unravel between the two nations as time goes by. It is then that the fate of diplomatic relations between Washington and Venezuela could be determined.
